How to Preach the Gospel

How to Preach the Gospel

The Bible is replete with instructions for the believer to preach the gospel. (Matthew 28:18&19, Mark 16:15, Acts 10:42, Matthew 10: 7, 1Corinthians 9:16). Despite knowing this, a lot of believers still struggle with preaching the gospel. For some, it’s the question of how to preach, where to preach or what to preach.

This article will help you understand the basics of preaching the gospel, and how you can communicate it effectively.

 Here are 5 tips to effectively preach the gospel;

1. Learn The Message.

Having a wealth of knowledge about something allows you to talk about it well. This means a good place to start will be; learning and understanding the message of the gospel. You cannot explain what you don’t understand.

The gospel can and should be taught. When Jesus sent out his disciples, he told them where to go, what to do and what to say. You need to learn the message of the gospel and understand it to be able to preach it effectively.

2. Use Conversation Starters.

The urgency of preaching sometimes gives room for being pushy, and it might turn out to be uncomfortable for the person you are trying to communicate with. A way to navigate this is to use conversation starters and then ease into what you want to say.

Examples of conversation starters are;

  • Genuinely asking how their day went/is going.
  • Compliments (E.g: I like your dress, where did you get it?)
  • Asking them questions (E.g: What do you thinks happens when people die?, What’s your view on eternal life?,etc)

It is easier to communicate when you have acquainted yourself with the person you are talking to or gotten them to talk to you in a general sense.

3. Invite them to Church.

A beautiful way to go about sharing the gospel is to also invite people to church. This is largely for people that do not want to listen to you first-hand. Hand them an invite to church, and you can trust the Holy Spirit in partnership with your pastor to reach them through the service. Make sure your invite is gentle and loving so that they don’t perceive it wrongly.

4. Read The Room.

Preaching the gospel effectively will require you to read the room and understand the right time to speak.  Sometimes, the room requires you to be very brief and sometimes, it can require a lengthy conversation. You may need to share a personal testimony and just keep it going from there but the point is; you need to be very observant to address what your audience needs at the time.

5. Pray.

Prayer is an essential part of preaching the gospel. If you are going to talk to people about Jesus, you need to learn to pray for them. You cannot successfully evangelize people you haven’t prayed for. Prayer goes a long way in preparing their hearts to receive from you. You activate the ministry of the spirit when you pray, such that when it seems like they didn’t even listen to you, the Holy Spirit can continue the work in their heart.

Finally, one thing to note is that you can never waste your time preaching the gospel. The energy you would put into making your business work, or growing your company, is the same energy you should put into the great commission. After all, it is your Father’s business. Every other thing you excel at in  life is a witness that you can excel in the things of the Spirit as well. So put in the extra effort and tell people about this gospel you have received.
